“Are you sure you got everything?”

We were standing in the line at curbside check in as my mother ran down a quick inventory check.

“Book bag, wallet, money, ID, socks, toothbrush, toothpaste, underwear?”

“Mom!”

“What? I’m just making sure you thought of everything.”

“Trust me, if I didn’t I know you did.”

Nana hugged me and tucked $50 in my back pocket. “Good luck.”

My mother tapped her index finger to her chin trying to see if she had left anything out. “What about deodorant?”

“Jasmine would you leave that boy alone before you make him miss his flight.”

Tears welled up in her eyes as we embraced, “To the moon and back.”

“To the moon and back.”

I kissed her on the forehead and waived goodbye one last time before running off towards my gate.

I wasn’t a big fan of early mornings but today I had a better appreciation for them as I boarded American Airlines. I tried to blend in with the other passengers but I’m sure it was obvious that I had never flown before, let alone first class.

The seats were like small recliners equipped with an in-seat personal video system and personal viewing monitors. There was ample storage space underneath my seat as well as plenty of room to stretch my legs out.

Truth be told, this would be the first time that I was leaving Ohio and I couldn’t wait. I had always wanted to get out and travel but we never had the money to do so. I was praying that this visit to UK would change all that.

I waited until the flight attendant was finished explaining the safety features of the aircraft before putting on my headphones.

The Boeing 767 started its climb into the sky as I said a quick prayer for safe arrival. I put my seat back and found comfort immediately nestling underneath the warm duvet.

I wasn’t sure what the rest of the plane looked like but I was glad my talents had afforded me what I imagined to be star treatment.

“Welcome to Lexington.”

As soon as I stepped outside in the area designated for passenger pickup I was greeted by an excited Mr. Fletcher.

He took my bags and put them in the backseat then opened the passenger door allowing me to get into the all black Range Rover.

“Did you enjoy your flight?”

“Man did I? Mr. Fletcher…”

“Alex, please call me Alex. Mr. Fletcher is my father.”

He appeared just as cool and laid back as he did the first time we met. I assumed he had a million variations of the polo he wore because he was dressed in one identical to the white one I met him in except it was Kentucky blue with white lettering.

“Alex this is crazy, I feel like some kind of celebrity.”

“Well you are, in your own right.”

I smiled as I looked out the window taking in all of the beauty Kentucky had to offer.

“We have a lot packed into your schedule today so I hope you’re ready to get started. We’ll grab some breakfast at the Student Center and then we’ll go from there.
